Install a customized Adobe Reader 9.4

Here is a little “How To” about installing Adobe Reader 9.4 in a Terminal Server/Remote Desktop environment. You can also use this procedure to install the Reader on Desktops.

  1. Download and install the Adobe Customization Wizard 9 on your client or server
  2. Download Adobe Reader 9.4 in German or English
  3. Run the following command to extract the exe file: “AdbeRdr940_en_US.exe -nos_o”Reader9″ -nos_ne”, you find the files in the folder “Reader9”
  4. Start the Adobe Customization Wizard and open the file “AcroRead.msi” from the “Rader9” folder
  5. Now you can make your customizations, I prefer the following:

Windows 2008 R2 RDS (XenApp 6) – restrict the user desktop

I have done some XenApp 6 deployments the last weeks and often published the server desktop for the users. With Windows 2003 it was easy to hide the “All Users” components, so that users didn’t see the links on the desktop or the Administrative Tools folder in the start menu.

With Windows 2008 R2 it’s a bit different, the well known group policies don’t work for Windows 7 / 2008 (R2). By default users see the “Administrative Tools” folder in the start menu and the “Server manager” and “Powershell” links pinned on their taskbar.

MS just released a tool called "Remote Desktop Load Simulation Tools". It’s a tool for server capacity planning and performance/scalability analysis, similar to Citrix EdgeSight for Load Testing and VSI 2.0 from Login Consultants.

Branding Policy delay is back with Internet Explorer 8

The 20 sec. logon delay is back after installing Internet Explorer 8 on a Windows 2003 XenApp/Terminal Server. Microsoft has just released a hotfix.
