Citrix Access Gateway 5.0 and Access Controller available for download

Today Citrix released CAG 5.0 and the new Access Controller Software (formerly known as Advanced Access Control). You can download the VPX for XenServer/VMWare, the Access Controller for Windows 2008/2008 R2 and an ISO image/upgrade image for the model 2010 hardware appliance here (MyCitrix account required).

In my post “Access Gateway 5.0 a deeper look Part 1” I already informed you about the new features and the basic configuration of the CAG, part 2 is coming soon, it’s about configuring the CAG for remote access. Part 3 will concentrate on the Access Controller, so stay tuned…

Install a customized Adobe Reader 9.4

Here is a little “How To” about installing Adobe Reader 9.4 in a Terminal Server/Remote Desktop environment. You can also use this procedure to install the Reader on Desktops.

  1. Download and install the Adobe Customization Wizard 9 on your client or server
  2. Download Adobe Reader 9.4 in German or English
  3. Run the following command to extract the exe file: “AdbeRdr940_en_US.exe -nos_o”Reader9″ -nos_ne”, you find the files in the folder “Reader9”
  4. Start the Adobe Customization Wizard and open the file “AcroRead.msi” from the “Rader9” folder
  5. Now you can make your customizations, I prefer the following:

User Profile Manager 3.2 and Offline Plug-In 6.0.1

Citrix released a new version of User Profile Manager, here you can read about the issues fixed in this release and here you can download UPM 3.2 after login to your mycitrix account.

If you plan to update you UPM from version 2.x to 3.x you can only do this with the new 3.2 release, read the corresponding upgrade FAQ.

There is also an update for the streaming client available, Offline Plug-In 6.0.1 fixed a lot of issues, Citrix recommends installing this update! This release has also full support for streaming Office 2010.

Citrix XDPing Tool

The XDPing tool is not new, I got it from our Citrix partner advisor a long time ago. Is is a command-line based application which you can use to check for the causes of common configuration issues in a XenDesktop environment.

Depending on how the tool is run, and from where, the following checks and information can be displayed:

• Information and status of Network Interfaces and Network settings. (Console Only)

• Performs DNS lookup and reverse lookup on the IP address of the device.

• Information on Time synchronization and time check for Kerberos Authentication (Console Only)

• User information for login User (Console Only)
– Including User details, Authentication type used, Group Membership.

• Machine information (Console Only)

XenDesktop 4 licensing changes

Citrix decided to change the licensing model with the new XenDesktop release to a named user license model, many people where upset and not happy with this.

Brian Madden wrote two articles about that, and guess what, these articles were two of the most-read ones with lots of comments. Click to read the first and second one.

I guess this convinced Citrix to change the licensing model in XenDesktop 4 to a much better one:

In the future there will be different editions, with user or device licenses:

CitrixTools.NET published a new Web Interface "White Theme" for Web Interface 5.2

Citrix Web Interface 5.2 is part of the new Feature  Release 2 for XenApp 5.0. On CitrixTool.NET you can download a new White Theme for WI 5.2.
